the language of breathing and healing
“Breathing" is said to be the body's most basic communication system. Aside from the purpose of taking in oxygen, our breathing is the only system in our body that is both voluntary and involuntary, connecting the two systems to control how our body responds to stress. How we breathe directly controls how our body will react to its environment, to stress, and to comfort. When breathing shallow, quick breaths, our body will react in a "fight or flight" manner: our heart rate increases, pulse increases, stress hormones are released, blood is reduced in the abdominal cavity (and organs) and increased into our muscles to prepare us to fight or run for survival in a stressful situation. In a truly stressful situation, this is an amazing system of survival, however, meant for a short duration. In today's world, situations of stress or calm are often confused, superimposed, often causing a response of continuous "fight or flight" with no down time. Given time, our systems begin to break down and "disease" sets in. The most prominent system controlling this response is our breathing.

Together, we will learn to breathe in a pattern that can very quickly reverse our body's response of "fight or flight" to one of calm, healing, and recovery, reducing tissue damage and disease and promoting overall well-being.
